Over The Nonexistent River And Through The Real Woods
Rats - no more pictures, at least not yet. I sort of came home and melted into the sofa the past couple of nights, kicked back with a book and turned on the television. I should've been writing, or posting, or taking photos - something constructive.
Which is pretty much why I decided not to do anything constructive.
It feels positively decadent to come home after work and know that I won't get several phone calls asking me how to spell a word or telling me to fix somebody's screw-up on the computer. It feels even more so to sit down with a novel and read it through without interruption. I hardly know how to feel any more, matter of fact!
The writing is overdue, and barring catastrophe I'll do some of that tomorrow, along with taking some photos. Provided the forest fires don't get us.
See, that's the one downside to living in demi-paradise. Where there are trees, you risk getting burned out every now and then. Last year's big fire in Arizona came to within four miles of here. The fire season has kicked off. While it's now contained and never put us in imminent danger, the smoke and ash from the Bart fire was drifting over town earlier in the week. It was pretty eerie to see and smell smoke and to see ash falling like snow.
The next few weeks will be critical. The peak of the fire season is usually from now until the monsoons hit in early July or thereabouts. While I'm not really frightened at the possibility, I do have to acknowledge that the risk is there.
The next few weeks are likely to be scorchers -- we are expected to hit 97°F on Sunday
It isn't going to be possible for me to go back and read every entry in everyone's diaries, but I'm working my way through so I should hopefully at LEAST have read the current one for everyone I normally read. If I didn't comment and you updated recently, my eyes probably crossed at the point when I was reading what you wrote. Hit me with a note or email and I'll do my best to catch up this weekend!
But I AM determined to write again and begin actively pursuing publication. I have a wonderful supply of peace and quiet, a decent place to live, a job that doesn't require me to put in a bazillion hours a week, and so on. I have no more excuses!
While obviously it isn't possible now, I am going to start putting money back to get a combination VCR/DVD player. I don't necessarily need a DVD recorder, but it would be nice to have a player. I don't even have a DVD player on my computer, just never got around to updating the darned thing. The whole being-lazy-for-two-weeks-and-watching-television thing has put me into the mindset that there are sometimes things on TV I want to watch but can't stay up that late. I have a friend who's a big fan of the television show Medium and I want to watch. I also would like to catch up on a couple of others that involve friends in the industry. The idea of actually watching television has become so novel again that I'm enjoying the heck out of it.
So while the most immediate plan is to pay the bills and otherwise not spend an extra penny, once I get past the initial stage I'm going to hopefully spring for a new semi-high-tech toy.
And yes, I DO know how to program it.
Before - After
In the grander scheme of things, no soul can truly be replaced. Each one of us has a place in the universal tapestry. We each contribute our own color and texture. When one thread is snipped too soon, it distorts all the threads around it. Other lives can unravel and tear. If the wrong thread is ripped away, the whole fabric of life becomes dangerously fragile.
