Back At It

I went in to work today, barely managed to get through the day but the one good thing - Boss finally had to acknowledge that he needed to quit screwing around and to go get his surgery done. So we now have BJ helping out on the air. He's got one of those big, booming voices that Boss thinks is perfect radio, even though it went out in the fifties or sixties. Oh well, it's still another body who can pick up some of the slack.

Good thing I went on in to work, even though I definitely didn't feel my best. I really got very little break once I got there. Chatted briefly with chaosdaily but was multi-tasking even while doing that, surfing for some research, stopping a couple of times to notarize stacks of invoices; and finally had to get off IM before long because it got crazy. We got the ID on one of the two men who were dumb enough to try and cross a flooded creek. Needless to say, he's dead. The second guy's presumed dead but they haven't found his body yet. These people were local, too. They knew better. But did that stop 'em? Nope.

Dumb, dumb dumb. A total waste of of two lives.

One rain guage in our area measured 4.8" of rain in just this last storm, and we've got more storms rolling in, starting Friday, then a second one Monday. The one Friday's supposed to be relatively tame, but we've been warned that the one Monday's another doozy. I guess the fun never ends, does it?

Oh well, frantic as it got (I was updating the story literally every few minutes,) I'm glad there were no more casualties. The creek overflowed its banks and they had to evacuate a few folks, but thank God it wasn't worse.

I'm not going to be online for long tonight, still coughing my head off and not feeling my best. I have to record a couple of things for the morning news, but then I'm curling up with a paperback book and vegging out for the remainder of the night.

I lifted this nifty little list from chaosdaily. I thought it was one of the cooler quizzes/lists:

According to the BBC, these are the fifty foods to eat before you die (the idea is to cross out the ones that you've eaten). GW adds, donít cross off anything if you havenít eaten it under the listed name.

  1. Fresh fish
We used to catch our own - doesn't get much fresher than that!
  2. Lobster
I love it, though shrimp is still my favorite shellfish.
  3. Steak
I'd never make it as a vegetarian.
  4. Thai cuisine
I had pepper chicken once, liked that, but don't like the peanut sauce my friend let me taste.
  5. Chinese Food
I think I could eat Chinese twice a week and never get tired of it.
  6. Ice cream
Tell me one person who DOESN'T like ice cream!
  7. Pizza
I make homemade - from the crust up.
  8. Crab
I can take it or leave it.
  9. Curry
I don't like all curry but I keep a bottle of curry powder in my cabinet - it's a favorite to use with leftover turkey at Thanksgiving.
  10. Prawns
    Not under that name.
  11. Moreton Bay Bugs
    Never heard of it.
  12. Clam chowder
I make it homemade every now and then and the kids fight for the leftovers
  13. Barbecue
I don't make it often but when I do, I slow cook until the meat's falling apart and it's soooo tender.  I like the spicy bbq sauce, though, none of that ketsup-in-disguise stuff.
  14. Pancakes
    Staples. Everyone has pancakes.
  15. Pasta
My boys think there are two food groups: Mexican food and pasta.
  16. Mussels
  17. Cheesecake
    Another favorite.
  18. Lamb
I don't like all lamb but when it's fixed right it is heavenly...
  19. Cream tea
  20. Alligator
  21. Oysters
I think the cooked ones are okay if they're fried.
  22. Kangaroo
  23. Chocolate
One of the basic food groups, naturally!
  24. Sandwiches
I grew up taking my lunch to school.  Sandwiches and I are well acquainted.
  25. Greek food
I didn't like what I had - it tasted like cardboard with stale spices.
  26. Burgers
Fast food favorite: Burger King burgers, extra pickles, no onions, no cheese.  Mmmmmm....
  27. Mexican food
I make my own homemade tamales - and chimichangas, chili rellenos, and so on. I used to make a Mexican food meal for up to thirty on the weekends.
  28. Squid
Hated it though. The texture is squishy and icky.
  29. American diner breakfast
    Diner breakfasts are da bomb.
  30. Salmon
One of my favorite meals was a surprise - Salmon Louie in Santa Barbara, California. I was determined to have seafood while there but looked dubiously at the pink stuff on the pinky-orange fish. I think ended up going back for thirds!!!
  31. Venison
Yep.  And since my oldest son just got an elk, I'll be having more soon.
  32. Guinea pig
    Ummm.... no....  Just, no.
  33. Shark
This one's a maybe - I think I might have had it but not sure so leaving it unmarked.
  34. Sushi
I am addicted to sushi.   Love Ebi, love California rolls and Philly rolls, love dragon rolls...  I just love sushi!!
  35. Paella
  36. Barramundi
  37. Reindeer
I guess it would be comparable to elk, but never had any.
  38. Kebab
It's been a while but used to make them now and then.
  39. Scallops
  40. Australian meat pie
  41. Mango
I've had it, don't like it.
  42. Durian fruit
Is this real or made up?
  43. Octopus
I've had octopus sushi. It's kind of rubbery, looks like thin-sliced hazelnuts, but I like it okay.
  44. Ribs
Yep, though I'm not overly fond of them.
  45. Roast beef
Often at my house, fixed with various veggies.
  46. Tapas
  47. Jerk chicken/pork
  48. Haggis
  49. Caviar
Icky stuff. Must be an acquired taste but my first taste didn't encourage me to try again.
  50. Cornish pastry
    1. Before - After

In the grander scheme of things, no soul can truly be replaced. Each one of us has a place in the universal tapestry. We each contribute our own color and texture. When one thread is snipped too soon, it distorts all the threads around it. Other lives can unravel and tear. If the wrong thread is ripped away, the whole fabric of life becomes dangerously fragile.
