Just when you thought it was wet weather, somebody put the "wild" back in "wildfire."
We've been getting rain virtually every afternoon and evening, which is pretty typical for monsoon season (which arrived late this year.) Unfortunately along with the monsoons come lightning, and those in turn mean wildfires, which are in turn whipped into firestorms by the winds from the thunderstorms, spreading out of control all too quickly. We had more evacuations overnight and nearly every highway across the region has been shut down thanks to fires. It ain't pretty out there.
Again, nothing in my immediate vicinity at the moment, though the closures certainly impact my listening area. Of course, storms being storms, nowhere is entirely safe from wildfires and I know I have got to pack up critical papers, etc., into a single and easy-to-access spot (and preferably inside something fireproof,) and probably should have a suitcase at ready, just in case. I can disassemble and move my computer pretty quickly, though if lightning strikes one of the trees right next to where I live, it's a pretty safe bet that the computer will be toast, right along with everything else.
It's days like this that the old news rush comes back to me. I still love the news biz, but my stress levels have dropped dramatically by removing myself from it. There are still stresses with being the manager, of course. In fact, there are more stresses. Today was another marathon day, too. I worked until nearly 6:30 tonight after starting at 6am, and my lunch was cut short by a call from the station owner.
I will be working again tomorrow, and next week's already lining up to be another back-to-back marathon. If things don't calm down shortly I'm going to have to make some changes. I don't want to get burnt that way any more than I want to take on a wildfire in my back yard!
I didn't get the opportunity to speak directly to T today - both of our schedules precluded it, unfortunately - but we've been back and forth on email. Hopefully we can catch up again this weekend, though at the moment I don't know if my schedule will allow it. I have the live program on-air tomorrow plus got talked into going to a concert tomorrow night. I have more work to do on Sunday, and not sure yet how much time that's going to take. Besides all of that, I forgot to go to the bank today and since I don't have a frigging ATM card and I didn't get any cash out, I am broke for the weekend, don't think I have more than $5 in my purse, if that. A lot of places won't take a check at all, and most of them up here won't take a check for more than the amount any more.
Can't blame businesses because they've gotten screwed over by bad checks but still...
We are tentatively going to get together next weekend... but unfortunately I just remembered I've got a live show next Saturday night, too, set it up before I ever met T, and can't very well back out. Darn it. So hopefully we can work around that.
I got virtually no sleep last night so I'm going to curl up with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and just relax for the rest of the night. I'll try to catch up with diaries (among other things) tomorrow.
Before - After
In the grander scheme of things, no soul can truly be replaced. Each one of us has a place in the universal tapestry. We each contribute our own color and texture. When one thread is snipped too soon, it distorts all the threads around it. Other lives can unravel and tear. If the wrong thread is ripped away, the whole fabric of life becomes dangerously fragile.
